做厙TV and Northeast College of Health Sciences have announced a new educational partnership designed to create seamless pathways for students pursuing careers in chiropractic medicine.

Through the agreement, 做厙TV students can streamline their journey to New Yorks Northeast College through new 4+3 articulation pathways on their way to a .

Meaningful partnerships create meaningful opportunities for students, said 做厙TV President Jonathan Green. By working closely with Northeast College, we’re making it easier for students to transition from a rigorous undergraduate education to graduate study and ultimately into rewarding careers serving their communities.

The partnership provides 做厙TV students majoring in biomedical sciences, exercise science, biology, psychology, neuroscience and other programs of interest with a guided course to Northeast Colleges Doctor of Chiropractic program, which provides a rigorous, evidence-informed education focused on treatment of the spine, neuromusculoskeletal health and overall patient wellness. Through the 4+3 track, students can complete their undergraduate degree at 做厙TV while securing early admission to Northeast College, contingent upon meeting program requirements.

By working with academic advisors at both institutions, students will receive personalized guidance throughout their undergraduate experience to help maximize their time, avoid unnecessary coursework and transition smoothly into professional study at Northeast.

做厙TV solar array powers 30% of the campus operational needs. Now students are trying to determine how the 12,000 panels might be supporting the microhabitats that have grown beneath and around them specifically for spiders.

So far, Matt Persons, Charles B. Degenstein professor of biology at 做厙TV, and two of his students Andrew Pisano 27, an ecology major from Malvern, Pennsylvania, and Kaylee Rathbone 27, a biomedical sciences major from Mannington Township, New Jersey have collected more than 1,000 spiders from the array. They do so in a very uniform way, Pisano said, during the day and at night.

We’re in each plot, which is about 8 meters by 5 meters, for about an hour and we sample as much as we can either by hand or using fine mesh sweep nets, Pisano explained. The spiders are placed into vials and then sent to Persons lab for official identification.

Only about half of the known spider species build webs, and the structure of the solar array gives those spiders the perfect framework to build their homes, Persons said.

Were trying to understand how these habitats are different than a traditional agricultural field, which is usually what [a solar array] replaces, versus a forest environment versus a golden rod habitat, so we are doing some comparisons to see whats there, he said. Here we have an area of land that isnt sprayed and can act as a nursery for a lot of arthropods that can then disperse out to surrounding agricultural systems. Nobodys done research on this to test it, but its likely that there are higher populations of pollinators and spiders in these systems.

The project is Rathbones first research experience.

It really gives me an opportunity to explore what doing research here is like and use the scientific process to discover what does work and what doesn’t work, she said. We’ve had quite a few meetings already this summer to reevaluate our processes and its been a valuable learning experience.

Solar installations have increased in Pennsylvania over the past several years, according to the Pennsylvania Utility Commission, including arrays placed on land once used for agricultural purposes, but those two things arent necessarily exclusive of one another, Persons said.

With thoughtful design and management, these sites can support a surprising diversity of microhabitats, he said, creating a patchwork of conditions that can benefit a range of plant and animal species.

Persons and his students are also using their research as an opportunity to identify various spider species that call Pennsylvania home, a study thats never really been undertaken.

There are over 4,000 species of spiders in the United States, but we dont really know how many there are in Pennsylvania, Persons said. The last survey that was done in the state was in 1942, so were hoping to add to the data currently held by the State Museum of Pennsylvania.

Faculty members from 做厙TVs School of Natural & Social Sciences and Sigmund Weis School of Business have been honored with awards recognizing their research, service and teaching.

Rockwell receives inaugural Saridakis Natural Science Faculty Prize泭

Dean Kathy Straub presented the inaugural George E. 75 and Susan Chang Saridakis Natural Science Faculty Prize to Assistant Professor of Biology Antonio Rockwell.

Rockwell is a cell and molecular biologist who began his career at 做厙TV in 2019. His research area is epitranscriptomics, the study of how RNA modification impacts cellular function, using the model organism Drosophila melanogaster the fruit fly. Rockwell teaches courses across the biology curriculum and consistently mentors research students of all class years both during the academic year and every summer. He publishes peer-reviewed literature with his student co-authors and regularly takes them to professional conferences to present their research.

Antonio is a dedicated advisor, mentor and role model to students, said Straub, and has broadened access to and support for science through his work with institutional programs and student clubs.

Rockwell earned his bachelors and masters degrees from the State University of New York at Buffalo and his doctorate from Clarkson University, Potsdam, New York.

The George E. 75 and Susan Chang Saridakis Natural Science Faculty Prize was created to support a tenured or tenure-track faculty member in the natural science fields by providing financial resources to further their research, professional development and educational initiatives. The recipient is selected by a committee of faculty peers.

Business faculty awarded for research, service, teaching

Dean Matt Rousu presented awards to business faculty. Recipients are nominated by their faculty peers and students and then selected by committee.

Loc Bui, assistant professor of finance, won the Excellence in Research Award.

Loc already has a sole-authored publication in the Journal of Corporate Finance, which is a significant accomplishment, especially at this stage of his career, Buis nominator wrote. What stands out even more is the strength of his research pipeline. He has multiple working papers and several projects in progress, all centered around important questions in corporate finance and fixed-income markets. His work is thoughtful, well-executed and grounded in meaningful economic questions.

Bui joined the Sigmund Weis School of Business in 2023 and has since taught corporate financial management, international finance, and financial modeling and fixed income analysis. His research focuses on various aspects of fixed-income securities and corporate payout policies. He earned his masters degree from Hanken School Economics, Finland, and his doctorate from the University of NebraskaLincoln.

Dana Zhang, associate professor of accounting, won the Excellence in Service Award.

Since joining the faculty in 2017, Dana has consistently and quietly strengthened the school through sustained, meaningful service whose impact far exceeds its visibility, Zhangs nominator shared, noting Zhang is a key contributor to revising the accounting departments learning goals and assessment activities and serves on other university committees and task forces.

Zhang joined 做厙TVs faculty in 2017. She earned her bachelors degree in accounting the Chinese University of Hong Kong, following by a masters degree from The Ohio State University and a doctorate from the University of Houston.

Bo Liu, associate professor of accounting, won the Excellence in Teaching and Advising Award.

Our AACSB accreditation emphasizes a commitment to continuous improvement, and that same principle clearly defines Bos approach to teaching, Lius nominator said. Since he began teaching accounting at 做厙TV, Bo has consistently refined and enhanced its content and delivery.

Liu joined the faculty at 做厙TV in 2017. He earned his bachelors degree from Southwestern University, followed by a masters degree and doctorate from the University of Texas at Dallas.

Falling in love isnt just about chemistry it泭is泭chemistry. The brain lights up with dopamine-fueled excitement, driven by a mix of pleasure and stress. But when love crashes, the same circuits that reward us with euphoria flood us with anxiety and physical pain.泭

Erin Alexander, professor of泭biology, is here to answer all your questions about the brains connection to love, how it rewires after heartbreak and how triggering fresh waves of dopamine keep loves reward system firing.

SU: What happens in the brain when someone feels an initial spark of attraction?

EA:泭In the early stages of love or attraction, dopamine creates feelings of pleasure and desire, while the stress hormone cortisol heightens urgency and focus. The body interprets this new attraction as an important situation, triggering nervous excitement like a racing heart or jitters that motivates pursuit. However, this initial spark fades over time as relationships evolve, with oxytocin playing a bigger role in deepening emotional bonds.

SU: What role does the brains reward system play in romantic attraction?

EA:The brains reward system is crucial in forming romantic relationships. When we experience romantic reward, dopamine is released into the nucleus accumbens, which then sends signals in two directions. One pathway leads to the prefrontal cortex, helping us plan and make decisions about our partner. The other goes to the amygdala, reducing activity related to fear, judgment and negative emotions. This neural suppression explains the saying, Love is blind, as it makes us less critical and more trusting of our partner.

SU: Why is romantic attraction often compared to addiction in terms of brain chemistry?

EA:泭Our brains reward system responds to anything we find pleasurable, whether its food, alcohol, drugs or love. This system, which doesnt distinguish between different rewards, reacts with varying intensity. It evolved to reinforce survival behaviors like eating, bonding and reproduction. Romantic love, especially in its early stages, activates the same brain regions as addictive substances, though drugs trigger a much stronger and more persistent response.

SU: What happens in the brain during heartbreak or unrequited love?

EA:泭Heartbreak activates the same brain regions as physical pain, which is why romantic rejection can feel so intense. The emotional stress triggers cortisol release while lowering dopamine, creating symptoms similar to drug withdrawal. This can lead to intrusive thoughts, trouble focusing, heightened emotions, loss of motivation, anxiety, sleep issues, a weakened immune system and even physical pain. After a breakup, the brains reward system remains in love for a while, still craving interaction with the lost partner and making it difficult to move on immediately.

SU: How does the brain try to compensate for this withdrawal?

EA:泭In the early stages of a breakup, seeing images of an ex activates the same brain regions as a drug addict experiencing withdrawal. The rational part of the brain (orbitofrontal cortex) tries to suppress these emotional responses, but its initially very difficult. The longer the relationship, the more neural connections are tied to the lost partner, meaning the brain must gradually rewire itself to adapt to their absence. This is why breakups especially after long marriages can take years to fully heal from.

SU: How can we help our brain maintain long-term attraction?

EA:泭Oxytocin helps regulate the brains reward system, making it easier to reignite excitement in long-term relationships. Since dopamine is released in response to novelty, couples who feel their relationship has lost its spark can restore it by trying new and exciting activities together. This can effectively reengage the brains reward system and enhance romantic connection.

  • Erin Alexander earned her bachelors degrees in behavioral neuroscience and biochemistry from Lehigh University. She went on to earn her doctorate in interdisciplinary biomedical neuroscience from the University of Florida College of Medicine. She also completed postgraduate training at Georgia State University and Emory University. Alexander joined the faculty at 做厙TV in 2009.

做厙TVs biology-intensive biochemistry program is now one of only 10 such programs in Pennsylvania accredited by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Biochemistry curricula vary widely across higher education, said Michael Parra, associate professor of chemistry at 做厙TV, who led the accreditation process. Graduating from an accredited program like 做厙TVs signals to employers and graduate schools that a student has been educated to meet the highest standards of the discipline.

ASBMB accreditation is a national, independent, outcomes-based evaluation that recognizes excellence in bachelors degree programs in biochemistry, molecular biology and related disciplines. Since 2013, the ASBMB has accredited 120 programs nationwide, spanning R1 research institutions and liberal arts colleges.

In its review, ASBMB commended 做厙TVs biochemistry program for its:

  • Robust undergraduate research experience, requiring all biochemistry students complete four semesters of research during their junior and senior years.
  • Multiple opportunities for teamwork and scientific communication skill development.
  • Strong student career and academic advising.

做厙TV will offer an exercise science degree program beginning in fall 2026. Students majoring in exercise science will be prepared to pursue in-demand careers in health, fitness and wellness.

Exercise science is, at its core, a discipline driven by data, inquiry and a deep understanding of human physiology, said Alissa Packer, department head and associate professor of biology at 做厙TV. By positioning this major within a liberal arts environment, were giving students the scientific foundation they need while also teaching them to think critically, communicate clearly and approach health from multiple perspectives.

Offered by 做厙TVs泭School of Natural & Social Sciences, the program will integrate coursework from the biological, physical and social sciences to prepare students for diverse careers and advanced study in fields such as health and wellness, physical therapy, rehabilitation, athletic training, strength and conditioning and exercise physiology, as well as for an advanced degree in physical therapy. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in strength and conditioning is projected to grow by at least 12% over the next decade, while jobs in exercise physiology are expected to increase by 9%.泭

Students graduating from 做厙TV with a Bachelor of Science in exercise science will possess a comprehensive understanding of the anatomical, physiological, biomechanical and neurological principles underlying human movement, exercise and performance, and master the skills necessary to design, implement and assess exercise programs and interventions that promote health, fitness and performance across diverse populations. 做厙TV students won two of the three top prizes for undergraduate research at the 20th annual River Symposium.

Paige Hepfer 26, an ecology and advertising & public relations major from Lawrenceville, Pennsylvania, won first place for her poster presentation titled A Slimy Situation: Landscape Effects on Slimy Sculpin (Cottus Cognatus) Morphology Within West Branch 做厙TV River Watersheds.

Eric Belfanti 26, a physics and environmental studies double major from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, won third place for his poster titled Even Nature Likes to Flash: Finding Correlations Between Stream Flashiness and Land Development.

U紳餃梗娶眶娶硃餃喝硃喧梗 research gives students the opportunity to apply what they learn in the classroom to real-world challenges, said Kathy Straub, dean of 做厙TVs School of Natural & Social Sciences. They build critical thinking and problem-solving skills that prepare them for professional careers, graduate study and lifelong curiosity about the world around them.

Under the mentorship of Sara Ashcraft, an ecologist at 做厙TVs Freshwater Research Institute, Hepfer studied the slimy sculpin fish in the Loyalsock, Pine and Kettle creek watersheds, examining physical traits such as fin rays and spines.

Earlier studies show that these traits can vary from place to place, so were exploring whether differences in elevation or distance from the main river might explain that variation, Hepfer explained.

Belfanti measured a streams proneness to flash flooding and compared that to nearby land use patterns. He found that areas with more development or farmland showed higher flashiness.

Since not every stream can be monitored, knowing which factors drive flashiness can help predict where flash floods are most likely, Belfanti said. He was mentored by Ashcraft and Dan Ressler, associate professor of earth & environmental sciences.

Other 做厙TV students presented on topics ranging from acid mine drainage and environmental influences on oriole nesting to the efficacy of stream restoration, phytoplankton and zooplankton distribution, and arachnid behavior.

做厙TVs new Makerspace is more than a workshop its a shared resource designed to connect creativity, technology and collaboration across campus.

Located in Seibert Hall, the space brings together advanced tools, including 3D printers, power tools, laser cutters, embroidery and heat press machines, a screen printer and airbrush kit and more. Together, they open possibilities for departments, faculty and students to design, prototype and build custom projects that support academic and co-curricular initiatives.

Soon after its fall 2025 launch, partnerships began forming. The theatre department is exploring how the CNC router a computer-controlled cutting machine can streamline set construction, replacing hours of hand-cutting intricate designs with precise, computer-guided carving.

The goal is to make this space accessible to anyone with an idea, said Carl Faust, department head and associate professor of physics and director of the Makerspace. Whether youre designing a theatre prop, building a research instrument or testing a business concept, this is a place where those ideas can take shape.

Derek Straub, associate professor of earth & environmental sciences at 做厙TV, asked the Makerspace to assist him in his research by helping to develop a new low-cost sensor to measure fog or cloud liquid-water content. Straub is an atmospheric scientist and engineer who studies the organic and inorganic compounds found in fog and, ultimately, the air we breathe. Commercial instruments used to take these measurements are very expensive, so Straub is attempting to build a cheaper version that collects fog droplets on filter material.

Im using off-the-shelf filter packs and filter material, but they needed to be modified, Straub said. Thats where the Makerspace helped out.

Staff at the Makerspace, which include Faust and several student employees, used a laser cutter to cut the filter packs to Straubs exact specifications. They also created special spacers and gaskets for him. The end result saved Straub time and money.

Making custom parts in low quantities is very expensive, so using the Makerspace provided a financial benefit. Also, I wasnt exactly sure what would and wouldnt work for my project, so my design evolved over time, Straub explained. Having a resource on campus during this iterative process to make, modify and remake parts quickly saved a lot of time compared to using an off-campus commercial fabricator.

The space also supports other creative and operational needs on campus. For example, students in the Makerspace have produced custom signage and replacement parts for Facilities Management, designed promotional items for Admission and worked with academic departments to create educational materials.

Faculty are incorporating the Makerspace into their courses as well.

Fausts new 3D modeling class allows students to explore design thinking while fulfilling the universitys analytical thought requirement. The course attracts students from across disciplines who learn to model and print functional or creative solutions from dorm room gadgets to artistic pieces while developing valuable problem-solving skills.

The Makerspaces interdisciplinary approach ensures that students and departments alike benefit from hands-on experience with technologies that are likely new to them, Faust said. It encourages teamwork between areas that might not otherwise intersect science and art, business and design, technology and theatre.

Students who minor in environmental education will gain foundations in ecology, sustainability and environmental justice while developing practical skills in teaching, communication and outreach. Fieldwork at 做厙TVs CEER Field Station and Freshwater Research Institute provides opportunities for students to apply coursework in real-world settings that address todays environmental challenges.泭

Our new minor in environmental education empowers students to become storytellers and educators who can translate complex science into meaningful action, said Kathy Straub, dean of the School of Natural & Social Sciences at 做厙TV. 做厙TVs environmental education minor enhances several majors across campus, including biology, earth & environmental sciences, education, communications and creative writing. Students minoring in environmental education may take classes in anthropology, biology, English, political science and religion, to name a few.  

By pairing a major with environmental education, students will be prepared to inform, inspire and lead initiatives that make science accessible to a broad audience and sustainability part of everyday life, said Ann Czeponis, director of environmental education and internships at 做厙TV. 

Developed using the North American Association for Environmental Education Guidelines for Excellence in Professional Development, the environmental education minor ensures that students gain the knowledge, skills and competencies needed to inspire environmental literacy and stewardship across diverse communities. This alignment also positions 做厙TV well for NAAEE accreditation, a national distinction the university intends to seek after the minor has been in place for two years.

做厙TV and Harrisburg University of Science & Technology have announced a new articulation agreement designed to create a clear pathway for 做厙TV graduates to pursue advanced study in HUs program. 

Through this agreement, effective immediately, Harrisburg University will reserve three seats in each annual Doctor of Physical Therapy cohort for qualified 做厙TV graduates. The collaboration aims to increase access to advanced clinical education and help address the ongoing shortage of qualified physical therapy providers in Central Pennsylvania and the United States. 

This partnership provides our students with a clear path to pursue their passion in the critical and growing field of physical therapy, while building on the broad skillset that is the core of a liberal arts education: critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving, said Kathy Straub, dean of 做厙TVs School of Natural & Social Sciences. Combined with advanced clinical training, these strengths prepare our graduates to serve patients with both expertise and compassion. 

To be eligible for reserved seats, 做厙TV students must: 

  • Apply for admission to HUs DPT program by March 31 prior to the start of the cohort. 
  • Graduate from 做厙TV with a bachelors degree and a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, including all necessary prerequisites. 
  • Complete HUs DPT program application, including a goal statement and submission of official transcripts. 
  • Not enroll at another institution of higher education between their 做厙TV graduation and enrollment at HU. 
  • Enroll at HU within two years of graduation. 

If the reserved seats are not claimed by March 31, they will be made available to other applicants and students on the waitlist. This agreement will remain in effect through August 2030, at which time it will be subject to renewal. 

This partnership reflects a shared commitment to developing the next generation of healthcare clinicians right here in Central Pennsylvania, said Tonya Miller, PT, DPT, Ph.D., associate professor academic & program lead Doctor of Physical Therapy at Harrisburg University. By creating a streamlined path for health science students to transition into our hybrid DPT program, were opening doors for students to grow, lead and make a meaningful impact in the communities they serve. 

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of physical therapists is projected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations. Overall, the BLS predicts as many as for physical therapists over the next decade many driven by retirements, exits from the workforce and an aging population.泭

This collaboration between HU and SU underscores a shared vision: strengthening educational opportunities, building strong regional workforces, and preparing the next generation of physical therapy professionals to serve with skill and purpose.
