Due to axial precession — a slight wobble in Earth’s rotation — our North Star is not fixed. Over the 26\,000-year cycle known as the Great Year\, 11 stars will take turns guiding us\, with one “near miss.” \nSince 2015\, artist George Ferrandi has honored these stars through Jump!Star\, using Nebuta—a traditional Japanese technique for building monumental\, illuminated sculptures of paper\, wire\, string and wood. Created with communities across the country\, these sculptures form a ceremonial tradition that can be passed down to those who’ll witness the next North Star. \nA selection will be featured in once more & hopeful stars. Ferrandi will also teach a seven-week course in conjunction with the exhibition\, where °µÍřTV students will help build a new sculpture in the gallery. \nStudent-Led Tours: Sept. 30 and Oct. 2\, 12 p.m.\nTours led by art history majors and minors. \nThe Lore Degenstein Gallery is free and open to the public from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.\, Monday-Sunday. SUMMARY:9/11 Memorial Service
DESCRIPTION:°µÍřTV will recognize Sept. 11\, 2001\, terrorist attacks in New York\, Washington\, D.C.\, and Pennsylvania with a brief service that remembers two university alumni and all who died in the attacks that day. \nColleen Supinski ’96 was on the 104th floor of the South Tower\, where she was an associate trader for Sandler O’Neill & Partners\, and Chris Vialonga ’93 was on the 92nd floor of the North Tower\, where he worked as a foreign exchange trader for Carr Futures. Supinski was one of 66 Sandler O’Neill employees who died that day\, and Vialonga was one of 69 Carr Futures employees to perish. \n°µÍřTV’s 9/11 memorial overlooks the football stadium and track where Supinski and Vialonga spent much of their time as student-athletes. \nSupinski was on the women’s track and cross-country teams and was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority. Vialonga was a standout offensive lineman on the football team and a significant contributor to the 1991 South Region Championship squad’s run to the national Division III semifinals. He was also a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.

DESCRIPTION:Venezuela moved towards a socialist dictatorship when Hugo Chavez took power in the late 1990s and worsened when Nicolás Maduro did so in 2013. More than 8 million people have fled Venezuela due to Maduro’s regime — with accusations that the government has committed human rights violations through persecution\, repression\, illegal detentions\, killings and torture. \nDavid Smolansky\, who served as mayor of El Hatillo City in Caracas\, Venezuela\, shares his story about how the country’s leadership became a dictatorship and how the people are fighting back to return freedom to Venezuela. \nSmolansky’s lecture is presented by the Sigmund Weis School of Business. It is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:George Ferrandi: once more & hopeful stars
DESCRIPTION:How on earth will we say goodbye to Polaris? Like everything else in life\, even the North Star changes. Due to axial precession — a slight wobble in Earth’s rotation — our North Star is not fixed. Over the 26\,000-year cycle known as the Great Year\, 11 stars will take turns guiding us\, with one “near miss.” \nSince 2015\, artist George Ferrandi has honored these stars through Jump!Star\, using Nebuta—a traditional Japanese technique for building monumental\, illuminated sculptures of paper\, wire\, string and wood. Created with communities across the country\, these sculptures form a ceremonial tradition that can be passed down to those who’ll witness the next North Star. \nA selection will be featured in once more & hopeful stars. Ferrandi will also teach a seven-week course in conjunction with the exhibition\, where °µÍřTV students will help build a new sculpture in the gallery. \nStudent-Led Tours: Sept. 30 and Oct. 2\, 12 p.m.\nTours led by art history majors and minors. \nThe Lore Degenstein Gallery is free and open to the public from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.\, Monday-Sunday. The gallery is closed during university breaks; call 570-372-4059 for an appointment when classes are not in session.
