SUMMARY:Virtual Alumni Course: Memory & Forgetting
DESCRIPTION:Memory is more than simply a storage system; it is a dynamic process that allows the brain to encode and retrieve information\, but sometimes there are problems.   \nThis four-week course presented by Jim Briggs\, professor of psychology\, will explore how memory works and why it sometimes fails. Participants will examine key models of memory\, including encoding\, storage and retrieval processes\, and will analyze the distinctions between sensory\, short-term and long-term memory systems. The course will also investigate the malleability of memory\, its vulnerability to disruption and the major sources of forgetting.      \nThe course will be held online each Tuesday in February\, beginning Feb. 3 at 7 p.m.  \n°µÍøTV Jim Briggs  \nBriggs joined the faculty at °µÍøTV in 2011. His scholarly interests in the environmental and neurobiological underpinnings of memory formation\, memory retention and amnesia have resulted in several publications\, including eight with undergraduate student co-authors. In 2024\, he was recognized with the John C. Horn Award for Distinguished Scholarship and Creative Activity.
