SUMMARY:Bill Owens: Suburbia
DESCRIPTION:Suburbia\, first published in 1972\, was a slyly subversive look at an inward-looking middle class\, who in their own words accompanying the photographs\, were seemingly oblivious to the racial and cultural strife roiling America’s cities\, not to mention the Vietnam War half a world away. Bill Owens was born and raised on a farm in Northern California. After hitchhiking around the world and a stint in the Peace Corps\, he became a staff photographer for the Livermore Independent newspaper in 1968. \nThis exhibition has been organized by art2art Circulating Exhibitions\, artworks courtesy of the Collection of Michael Mattis and Judith Hochberg. \nStudent-Led Tours: Feb. 10 and Feb. 12\, noon\nTours led by art history majors and minors. \nThe Lore Degenstein Gallery is free and open to the public from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.\, Monday-Sunday. The gallery is closed during university breaks; call 570-372-4059 for an appointment when classes are not in session.

SUMMARY:Virtual Alumni Course: Memory & Forgetting
DESCRIPTION:Memory is more than simply a storage system; it is a dynamic process that allows the brain to encode and retrieve information\, but sometimes there are problems.   \nThis four-week course presented by Jim Briggs\, professor of psychology\, will explore how memory works and why it sometimes fails. Participants will examine key models of memory\, including encoding\, storage and retrieval processes\, and will analyze the distinctions between sensory\, short-term and long-term memory systems. The course will also investigate the malleability of memory\, its vulnerability to disruption and the major sources of forgetting.      \nThe course will be held online each Tuesday in February\, beginning Feb. 3 at 7 p.m.  \n°µÍřTV Jim Briggs  \nBriggs joined the faculty at °µÍřTV in 2011. His scholarly interests in the environmental and neurobiological underpinnings of memory formation\, memory retention and amnesia have resulted in several publications\, including eight with undergraduate student co-authors. In 2024\, he was recognized with the John C. Horn Award for Distinguished Scholarship and Creative Activity.

Publishing bestselling books in every category\, Sourcebooks is dedicated to changing lives through books. \nUnder Raccah’s leadership\, Sourcebooks has become the sixth-largest book publisher in North America. Recognized as a leader in data and innovation\, Raccah was named one of Publishers Weekly’s “Top 25 Book Business Changemakers” in 2022 and received the Publishing Titan Award in 2023. DESCRIPTION:Theatre Nohgaku is an international performance ensemble comprised of Japan and North American based members whose mission is to create and present plays in traditional noh style\, complete with Hayashi musicians\, masks\, costumes and stage sets. The company serves as a unique cultural and artistic intermediary between Japan and the English-speaking world. Theatre Nohgaku performs contemporary work that reaches across boundaries of culture and language to tell stories that reflect our shared humanity. \nTickets are required for Artists Series performances. Price categories are:  \n\nSenior: persons aged 60 or older \nNon-°µÍřTV Student: persons who are age 18 or younger or who have valid student identification \nAll others are charged the adult rate. \n\nTicket prices are: \n\nAdults $20 | Seniors $15 | Non-°µÍřTV Students $5\nA group of 15 or more is entitled to a 10% discount on tickets for the same event\, when purchased together. \n\nLocated in the Degenstein Center Theater lobby\, the box office is open Monday through Friday\, noon to 5 p.m. during the academic year.
