SUMMARY:Bill Owens: Suburbia
DESCRIPTION:Suburbia\, first published in 1972\, was a slyly subversive look at an inward-looking middle class\, who in their own words accompanying the photographs\, were seemingly oblivious to the racial and cultural strife roiling America’s cities\, not to mention the Vietnam War half a world away. Bill Owens was born and raised on a farm in Northern California. After hitchhiking around the world and a stint in the Peace Corps\, he became a staff photographer for the Livermore Independent newspaper in 1968. \nThis exhibition has been organized by art2art Circulating Exhibitions\, artworks courtesy of the Collection of Michael Mattis and Judith Hochberg. \nStudent-Led Tours: Feb. 10 and Feb. 12\, noon\nTours led by art history majors and minors. \nThe Lore Degenstein Gallery is free and open to the public from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.\, Monday-Sunday. The gallery is closed during university breaks; call 570-372-4059 for an appointment when classes are not in session.

SUMMARY:Faculty and Guest Artist Recital: Bardin-Niskala Duo
DESCRIPTION:The Bardin-Niskala Duo\, a cello and piano ensemble\, presents: How Did We Get Here? Examining Racism: Asking for Compassion Through Music. Join us for an evening of commissioned works from African American composers Quinn Mason and Anthony Green\, Kanaka Maoli composer Leilehua Lanzilotti and Japanese American composer Michi Wiancko. \nThese works address several racial injustices in the United States\, including slavery\, the colonization and acquisition of Hawaii as the 50th state and the 1942 U.S. Executive Order 9066 that forcibly imprisoned 110\,000 Japanese Americans for the duration of World War II. \nPersonal messages from the composers and a Q&A will follow the performance\, opening dialogue among audience members and the artists. \nThe Department of Music hosts nearly 60 events a year\, including a robust schedule of ensemble concerts\, student recitals\, faculty recitals\, guest artist series and more. These free public performances reflect our mission to educate students for productive\, creative and reflective lives while providing access to exceptional musical opportunities for the surrounding community.  Join us in person or stream select performances to experience the artistry of our talented musicians and distinguished faculty.
