SUMMARY:Bill Owens: Suburbia
DESCRIPTION:Suburbia\, first published in 1972\, was a slyly subversive look at an inward-looking middle class\, who in their own words accompanying the photographs\, were seemingly oblivious to the racial and cultural strife roiling America’s cities\, not to mention the Vietnam War half a world away. Bill Owens was born and raised on a farm in Northern California. After hitchhiking around the world and a stint in the Peace Corps\, he became a staff photographer for the Livermore Independent newspaper in 1968. \nThis exhibition has been organized by art2art Circulating Exhibitions\, artworks courtesy of the Collection of Michael Mattis and Judith Hochberg. \nStudent-Led Tours: Feb. 10 and Feb. 12\, noon\nTours led by art history majors and minors. \nThe Lore Degenstein Gallery is free and open to the public from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.\, Monday-Sunday. The gallery is closed during university breaks; call 570-372-4059 for an appointment when classes are not in session.

DESCRIPTION:Anna Badkhen’s new essay collection\, To See Beyond\, is forthcoming from Bellevue Literary Press in April 2026. She is the author of seven other published books\, most recently Bright Unbearable Reality\, longlisted for the 2022 National Book Award and for the 2023 Jan Michalski Prize for Literature. \nBadkhen’s awards include the Guggenheim Fellowship\, the Barry Lopez Visiting Writer in Ethics and Community Fellowship and the Joel R. Seldin Award from Psychologists for Social Responsibility for writing about civilians in war zones. \nA former war correspondent\, Badkhen has nonfiction in New York Review of Books\, Granta\, Harper’s\, The Paris Review\, Emergence\, Orion\, Adi and the New York Times\, and fiction in AGNI\, The Common\, Conjunctions\, Scalawag\, Virginia Quarterly Review and Zyzzyva. \nBadkhen grew up in the Soviet Union and is a U.S. citizen. She is an Artist-in-Residence at the University of Pennsylvania. \nHer reading is presented as part of the Seavey Reading Series\, which provides students with unparalleled access to acclaimed authors through readings and classroom activities.

SUMMARY:Virtual Alumni Course: Memory & Forgetting
DESCRIPTION:Memory is more than simply a storage system; it is a dynamic process that allows the brain to encode and retrieve information\, but sometimes there are problems.   \nThis four-week course presented by Jim Briggs\, professor of psychology\, will explore how memory works and why it sometimes fails. Participants will examine key models of memory\, including encoding\, storage and retrieval processes\, and will analyze the distinctions between sensory\, short-term and long-term memory systems. The course will also investigate the malleability of memory\, its vulnerability to disruption and the major sources of forgetting.      \nThe course will be held online each Tuesday in February\, beginning Feb. 3 at 7 p.m.  \n°µÍřTV Jim Briggs  \nBriggs joined the faculty at °µÍřTV in 2011. His scholarly interests in the environmental and neurobiological underpinnings of memory formation\, memory retention and amnesia have resulted in several publications\, including eight with undergraduate student co-authors. In 2024\, he was recognized with the John C. Horn Award for Distinguished Scholarship and Creative Activity.
